West Lodge

An extension to a listed lodge house to a country park house in North London. The entrance gate and house lodge was built in 1898 and was Grade II listed in 1999. The existing structure and interior of the house was renovated sensitivity to preserve the design, materials and finishes of the original house and a contemporary rear addition was added to create a more appropriate living space for the conversion to a family home. Glass is used extensively to create separation and articulation between old and new structures. Where the glass abuts the existing building there is the lightest of touch; frameless glass is set into exiting finishes with a single cut with delicate movement joint of silicone. Within the addition the glass becomes full height sliding doors with minimal frames, The solid walls of the addition refer to the existing lodge with brick and custom made cladding panels with flint infills. A delicate steel frame structure permits the new zinc roof to float over the existing building and sandwich glass clerestory windows to allow light into a downstairs room within the existing structure. The original oak column loggia to the front of the house which was used as a viewing point for the gatekeeper is repeated on the new addition with a delicate steel columned loggia to provide an external space to view the ancient park woods beyond.
