Formation

An office for a small graphic design studio in Clerkenwell, London.

The existing shell was part of a series of Victorian buildings that made up a meat smokehouse. Previously dislocated over several floors the studio was consolidated by the insertion of a double height volume and a connecting stair. Within the stairwell are placed a series of mirrors. They provide views from the first floor office to the entrance lobby below, to the courtyard outside and to the ground floor meeting room. Some mirrors are responsive and react to movement sensors on the stair. As visitors use the stair the mirrors “track” their movement. When there is no visitor movement on the stair the mirrors give an occasional nod to remind the office workers that they are there. Reflections dance across the walls whenever the mirrors are active.
